Heraldry of the Scottish barony
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE ABOLITION OF FEUDAL TENURE (SCOTLAND) ACT 2000, SCOTTISH BARONIAL HERALDRY IS NOW IN FLUX. PREVIOUS HERALDIC ENTITLEMENT HAS BEEN REVISED, AND NEW BARONS SEEKING A GRANT OF ARMORIALS SHOULD CONSULT THE LYON CLERK.
The owner of a Scottish barony, on petitioning the Lord Lyon, King of Arms, may be entitled to additaments to his ‘basic’ coat of arms.
The armorial achievement as granted to the nobility of Scotland consists of arms (on a shield), crest and motto, and the baron when he applies for the "extras" appropriate for his situation may also petition at this time for a territorial designation, becoming John Smith of Tallieban rather than plain John Smith.
